Fall 2015 MMS 7th and 8th grade Football Season
A mandatory parent & athlete meeting
will be held Sunday, Aug. 16th at 7:00pm in the Middle School
Cafetorium. 8th graders should meet in the multipurpose/locker room
at 6:00pm prior to this meeting to receive their football equipment. 7th
graders will go to the multipurpose/locker room after this meeting to receive
their gear.
There is a
fee of $20 to play football, and we will be collecting fees at this meeting. Also,
if you have a physical by this time please bring the completed form with you. ALL ATHLETES NEED A NEW PHYSICAL BEFORE
THEY CAN PRACTICE THIS FALL OR PARTICIPATE IN OUR SUMMER FOOTBALL CAMP ON JULY
13TH - 15TH so get your physicals taken care of early!
Our first official
practice will begin at 9:00am on Monday, Aug. 17th, at the Mandan
Middle School football field, and will end at 11:00am. We will continue to have
9:00am to 11:00am practices on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of that
week. For the remainder of the season, practice will run from 3:45 - 5:15. We will not have practice on Labor Day, Sept.
7th. A schedule of our games will be given out during the second
week of practice.
For our first three practices you will only need to wear a
T-shirt, gym shorts, tennis shoes or cleats (no metal cleats). We will also
have you wear the helmet you will be issued. Please try to have a mouth guard
purchased and fitted for these practices as well. (Make sure it has an
attachment strap, and it cannot be white or clear in color.)
Parents may pick up their child after practices at the
parking lot west of the field or the parking lot south of the school. Please do
not use the west bus loop as this will get very congested after practice. Parents,
please be on time to pick up your child! Penalties, such as reduced playing
time, will be imposed on athletes whose parents are arriving later than 5:35pm
to pick up their child.
Athletes must have three conditioning practice days in
before they are allowed to wear all of their pads, and a total of nine practice
days in before their first game.
I would recommend that all athletes do some running and
exercising prior to our season starting. This may reduce some of the muscle
soreness you will develop. Be sure to have your shoes broken in to reduce
blisters.
Our coaching staff is very excited about getting our
football season started, and we hope you are looking forward to it as well. Please
encourage your friends to come out this fall. Enjoy your summer, and we’ll see
you at our parent meeting on August 16th and at our camp on July 13th
– 15th.

Forms and Eligibility Requirements
The following five items/forms must be completed and returned to our coaching staff for a player to be able to participate in practices and games. Parents and Players must also visit our MHS Sports Medicine Website to watch the Know-The-Risks video (click here for the video link).
Our MMS Football season is only 8 weeks long, so the importance of off-season training has a huge impact on individual and team success. A great way for our football athletes to stay in shape is to join other sports (such as wrestling, basketball, hockey, track, etc.) in the off-season. Some students have busy schedules that do not allow them to join an additional sport. For these athletes, we have some additional opportunities for speed and strength training. The strength of our team depends on the strength of our athletes.
Before beginning any of the exercise routines below, please have your child check with a physician to see if the exercise routine is physically/developmentally appropriate.
1. High School Weight Room Contact: Todd Sheldon - MHS Varsity Football Head Coach - [email protected]
2. Grip Strength (for improved tackling) - Squeeze a tennis ball. Do Pull-ups/Chin-ups.
4. Body Weight Resistance Exercises - (can be done as a morning/evening series work-out) - Push-ups, Crunchers, Planks, Gut Busters, Spiderman Push-ups, Side-Planks, etc.
5. Agility/Footwork Drills - A great way to work on agility in a limited space (garage, basement, etc.) is with the 5-Dot Drills. Click here for the 5 Dot Drill Mat exercises. You do not need to purchase the mat to do the drills, but a low impact surface (or supportive athletic shoes) are recommended for the 5-Dot Drills.
6. Tough Mudder Cross-Fit Training - Click Here- A great make-shift kettle bell can be made by filling an old gallon milk jug with sand/gravel to desired weight, then wrap the jug with duct tape for durability and grip.
7. Play Football with a Group of Friends - Remember, football is a game, it should be fun at all levels. There will be moments of joy, pain, exhaustion, etc. but above all it should be fun. Find a group of buddies to go play catch, practice punting ball, create games, etc.
Game Schedule
Our 8th an 7th Grade game schedules are created during the first week of practice. Due to weather and other events, game times/location/dates are subject to change.
